n. Elk-wapiti or wap·i·tis

A large light brown or grayish-brown North American deer (Cervus canadensis) having long, branching antlers. Also called American elk, elk.

One of the largest of game animals in North America, and can be found in almost all geographic areas, but predominantly makes its home in the Rocky Mountain regions. Elk have two lesser known sub-species.

bulletRoosevelt elk primarily inhabits the dense rain forests of Vancouver Island in British Columbia and the coastal regions of Oregon, Washington and northern California. Mature Roosevelt elk bulls have antlers that are more massive than the Rocky Mountain elk, however they will usually be shorter and not as widespread.
bulletThe Tule elk  is very limited in its range and currently only inhabits California.

Elk Hunting in most cases is extremely challenging however the rewards can be very impressive.   It is not uncommon for young bulls to have 6 x 6 racks, weigh between 600 to 1100 pounds and provide you with the hunting  thrill of a lifetime.   The Antlers of Elk are usually colored chocolate brown, except for the tips, which are generally polished Ivory white.   An adult Bulls antlers will usually weigh around 12 pounds per side and extend around 50 inches in length. A 6 point Bull is called a Royal, a 7 point Bull - an Imperial, and an 8 point Bull - a Monarch

When Elk are in Rut, Bugling and Cow calling are a very fun and productive way to Hunt Elk. In Doing so, you are trying to draw the Bull Elk to you.  Shots during early Archery seasons are usually well under a hundred yards and sometimes as close as 5 to 10 yards.

Most bull elk shed their antlers between January and March, and as soon as their old antlers fall off, their new antlers begin to grow. These growing antlers have a fuzzy covering on them called velvet, which is like skin because it has nerves and blood vessels running through it. Those vessels carry the calcium and other minerals that form the antler bone.
